Outsand Portfolio Exhibition

Alice Mao: Yale University

First off, thank you so much for teaching me for all these years, and pushing me to be the best artist I can be. It was just what I needed, and I appreciate how you guys taught me a new way to see.
Wang laoshi was actually the first person who suggested that I should even apply for Yale, and I’m so, so grateful. Without her confidence in me, as well as my parents’ support, I probably wouldn’t have even shot my shot. Guo laoshi was also amazingly supportive, always being sure to point out both the good qualities and the flaws in my paintings.
GW was one of my favorite places to be throughout high school. And that’s saying a lot, since I was here pretty much half of the week, painting, sketching, and talking to my friends. What I loved about the class was the sense of community, the sense of camaraderie. We were all in it together, working on our portfolio, writing our essays, figuring out artist statements.
I’ll never forget our Monday tradition of ordering food when the sun set and we got hungry on our 5-hour class, of passing around the same pack of chik-fil-a waffle fries. It’s the sense of community that I missed the most, and look forward to finding at college.
Thank you both so much for an amazing 4 years of instruction!

Avery Li:RISD

I first came to GW Fine Art Studio in the fall of my sophomore year of highschool. I was intimidated; I felt that I was slow at improvement and behind my peers, who seemed to continuously produce masterpieces. However, under the tutelage of Professors Guo and Wang, I was able to grow rapidly. My eye and technical skill improved with their guidance, building an irreplaceable foundation in the concepts of proportion, form, and value. The style of academic arts they taught was refreshing from previous school art lessons in its directed methodology. They undoubtedly boosted my artistic skills to a level I couldn’t have achieved without their teaching. Beyond practical foundations, the professors nurtured my creative and conceptual efforts. During the grind, their encouragement was crucial in ensuring the successful completion of my work. The professors’ personal support throughout the progression of my college application art portfolio was invaluable in enrichening my ideas and the confidence I had in them. I have Professor Guo and Professor Wang to thank for my artistic development for much of highschool and the foundation I have for my future in the arts. I will be attending the Rhode Island School of Design as a prospective Illustration major.

Bill Shen: Parsons School of Design

Carol Yuan: Columbia University

Cindy Zhang: Pomona College

For the past six years in the GW Fine Art Studio, I have learned how to observe, how to distinguish between entity & part, cold & warm colors, obscurity & clarity etc., and was introduced to pencil sketching and oil painting, two different but equally interesting art media. Ranging from plaster sculptures of geometric objects to increasingly complex still-life, I was able to explore a variety of possibilities. Thanks to the teaching and guidance from Mrs. Wang and Mr. Guo, in addition to the improvements of my art skills, I had gained more awareness and ability to perceive aesthetics. Throughout these years, I’m very grateful for their generous encouragements and their constructive advises, letting my art skills and passion for art grow at the same time.

Dylan: Washington University in St Louis

Going to GW Fine Art Studios was one of the best decisions I made during my high school career. I had a little experience of sketching from professional teachers as a kid, but it was never something I really dived into. During my junior year, Guo laoshi and Wang laoshi allowed me to rediscover what sketching and painting meant for me. This time around, I approached art with a mature mindset and they gave me the knowledge to improve quickly. Over the short time I worked at the studio,my visual and observational skills have improved tremendously. As I prepare to work in an architectural studio environment in college, I can say with confidence that I am much more comfortable thanks to the studio here.

Eya Wang: MICA

Helen Zhou: Pratt Institute

I am grateful for the time I spent studying here at GW fine arts studio. Through my time here, I have been exposed to a world of creativity that I could not reach by myself. In a short amount of time, my skills improved dramatically. I learned to construct ideas and communicate through a visual language. The community of students are talented and motivated unlike that of any other. In an environment where everyone shares a passion for art and learning, I felt like I belonged. The professors are knowledgeable and kind, and their advice is always exactly what I need to improve. I started coming to the studio and oil painting at a young age. I remember the first time I smelled turpentine, I was bothered by the pungent smell. Professor Wang jokingly said to me that one day, it will smell like cake. I stopped for a while, and as I grew to realize my passion for art I returned to the studio. Now, every time I open a jar of turpentine, I think of cake and the incredible guidance of professor Guo and professor Wang.

James Lou: Pratt Institute

I started taking classes at GW Fine Art studio when I was in 9th grade. Immediately, on my first day of class, I felt welcomed and at home. I felt that the environment of the studio was perfect for learning and practicing art for dedicated artists. Mrs. Wang and Mr. Guo are the most patient art teachers I have ever had. They give detailed instructions and guide students every step of the way. They help students based on their individual needs and create assignment plans according to students’ own progress. This teaching style allows each student to learn and progress at their own pace, and thanks to that, every student feels comfortable in the studio because there is no competition and judgement. This is all thanks to the fact that the teachers are so thoughtful and caring for students. The teachers helped me tremendously with my college applications. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Mr. Guo and Mrs. Wang. I am happy that I went to the studio in 9th grade, and I am grateful for all the help and support that the teachers have graciously provided me with. It certainly is an experience I will not forget.

Jessica LaBrache: RISD

I joined the GW Fine Art studio at the beginning of my junior year of high school. I entered with very little technique and time left before I would begin applying for college, however Mr. Guo and Mrs. Wang helped me develop my technical and creative skills quickly and effectively. In this short period of time, they were also able to guide me in opening up my artistic line of vision, and dig well below the surface level when conceptualizing my ideas. This crucial skill has taught me to become a more purposeful and creative thinker, both in and out of the artistic realm. At the time, I lived in Tacoma and would drive to Bellevue multiple times a week in order to attend classes at the GW Fine Art Studio. I was worn out and unsure of my future aspirations, however the teachers never stopped encouraging me to pursue my artistic dreams. I am incredibly grateful for all the times they offered me inspiration and reassurance, and they have become both mentors and parental figures to me. Now, I am excited to begin a new journey at RISD this fall.

When I walked into the doors of GW Fine Arts Studios, I never imagined myself having such a clear understanding of the paths I want to take four years later. I want to thank Professor Guo and Professor Wang, it was your tireless teaching and enlightening that helped me discover my passion for art, and fostered that passion to grow. I want to thank my family for their endless support and encouragement, and thank my parents for letting go of my hands and letting me chase my dream.

I started drawing at GW at a young age, right when I moved here in 7th grade. Over these 6 years, I’ve transitioned from practicing sketching weak and unruly lines to piecing together sketches of massive busts and painting about things I care about. Under the guidance of Mr. Guo and Mrs. Wang, which took a lot of emotions and time, not only did I learn to be a better artist but I also learned to be a better person. I truly accredit my level of patience, meticulousness, and vision for a “final product” to my two teachers. I am forever grateful for this home and will not ever forget my growing up here. With their help, I developed my final art portfolio which I used for college applications, and I will be attending Columbia University in the fall, and although I won’t be studying art, the individuality and life of the city will always lead me to think back at my time at GW Studio.
